The derivation of the name is from the French for 'large' or 'fatty'.
Early records
This family name appears in Jersey at the end of the 13th century, and in Guernsey at the beginning of the same century. The name first appears in the Assize Roll of 1309. There are two family members, Robert and Thomas, mentioned in the Jersey Chantry Certificate of 1550
Thomas le Gros and sons were involved in the building of the Hospital (after a fire), Victoria and Albert Piers, Bonne Nuit, and Creux Harbour, Sark.

Payne's Armorial of Jersey
This name shares the antiquity common to all cognomens derived from personal accessories, and occurs very early in the annals of the Channel Islands. It frequently appears in the official Records of Guernsey of the 13th century. In 1204 John Le Gros was a Jurat of the Royal Court of that island; and in 1248 Peter Le Gros, or Grosse, appears as one of the Inquisitors appointed to declare before the Justices-Itinerant, the services, customs, and liberties, of its people.
In 1292 the name appears in Jersey, in an instrument dated on St Clement's Day, in that year. By the Extente of 1331, Guille Le Gros appears as one of the twelve sworn men called upon to declare the King's rights and dues in the parish of St John. In the latter part of the 16th century a member of the family settled in England, who is described, in a deed under his hand and seal, concerning certain property which he held at Peckham, as Peter Le Grose late of Her Majesty's Isle of Jersey.
Another of the name settled in Sark, soon after its colonization by the Seigneur of St Ouen, and was possessed of one of the forty freeholds of that island. Several of his descendants were “Juges et Capitaines de I'isle de Sere" ; one of whom, John Le Gros, was Judge there, and married Elizabeth Le Pelley of Guernsey. He left one son, who died without issue, and three daughters : Mary, wife of Philip Slowley; Elizabeth, wife of John De Jersey ; and Susan, wife of Nicholas Le Pelley; which latter subsequently purchased the Seigneurie of Sark of the descendants of James Milner, of Weston Green, Surrey, who became its possessor in 1721, by purchase of the trustees of Sir Charles Carteret.
In the churchyard of St Saviour is a cenotaph to the memory of Capt John Le Gros, RN, an officer of no mean reputation; he married a sister of Admiral D'Auvergne, Prince of Bouillon, and left an only daughter, who died unmarried.
Among the various branches of this widely diffused family is one which settled, in the beginning of the 17th century, in the parish of St Helier, in the person of Elias Le Gros, who enjoyed a small estate there, in right of his wife, Mary Dumaresq. From him descends Gervais Le Gros, of Jesus College, Cambridge, the Greffier of Jersey. (See Seafield)
Another branch has been located for several centuries in the parish of Trinity; one of whose sections is represented by John Le Gros Esq., MRCS., Eng., LRCP., Edin. John Le Gros, Constable of St Lawrence, represents a third branch of the family.

Captain Clement Le Gros
Clement Le Gros, the son of farmer Jean and Anne, Nee Clement, was born in St Lawrence in 1837. He married Jane Nicolle in the same parish in 1868. He obtained his master's certificate in 1865 and was captain of the Ocean Bride in 1873 when she was sailing out of Sydney, Australia.
A crewlist for an Ocean Bride voyage from Port Louis to Sydney in 1873 shows him as Master, with a number of Jerseymen in his crew, including Charles Perchard, Francis Alexander and Philip Hamon. Ocean Bride was built in Jersey but Clement Le Gros is not listed as a sea captain in John Jean's Jersey Sailing Ships, and we have been unable to identify him in any of our Le Gros family trees.
He had retired from the sea by 1880, when he was elected Constable of St Lawrence. He was elected a Jurat nine years after that.

These lists replace earlier Family page baptism lists, which were not regularly updated. They have the added advantage that they produce a chronological listing for the family name in all parishes, so you do not have to search through A-Z indexes, parish by parish.
We have included some important spelling variants on some family pages, but it may be worth searching for records for a different spelling variant. Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De. To search for further variants, or for any other family name, just click on the appropriate link below for the first letter of the family name, and a new tab will open, giving you the option to choose baptism, marriage or burial records. You will then see a list of available names for that type of record and you can select any name from that list. That will display all records of the chosen type for that family name, and you can narrow the search by adding a given name, selecting a parish or setting start and end dates in the form you will see above. You can also change the family name, or search for a partial name if you are not certain of the spelling
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
New records
Since August 2020 we have added several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
