Origins of surname
The surname has Germanic origins, although the exact derivation is somewhat obscure. It comes from the personal name Gervase, said to be composed of geri = spear and vaulx valley. Howere, that makes no sense to us and other sources say the derivation of the second part is unknown.
Early records
The name appears in the StHelier baptism register in 1679, but there is a long gap until the next entry in 1819
