General Sir Peter Whiteley

Lieut-Governor of Jersey 1979-1984

General Sir Peter Whiteley was the first Royal Marine officer to hold the office of Lieut-Governor. On his retirement he was Commander in Chief of NATO forces in Northern Europe.

Military career

Educated at Bembridge School, Peter Whiteley was commissioned as a Royal Marine during World War II.

He was selected to become Commanding officer of 42 Commando in 1965. He was then appointed Commander of 3 Commando Brigade in 1968. He became Commandant General Royal Marines in 1975 and Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces Northern Europe in 1977.

He became Deputy Lieutenant of Devon.
